Anyone that has ever worked in IT will have a few war stories of being contacted by a distressed family member, colleague or friend who had lost all of their data at 9:30 pm on a Wednesday evening. Collectively we now generate over 1.8 zettabytes of data per year. Even our phones contain photos we have collected over many years and 30% of people still proudly fly by the seat of their pants and declare that they have never even backed up their data.

http://jenniferblyth.com/biography/ Considering that 1 in 10 computers are infected with viruses each month, and the endless onslaught of major hacks has become disturbingly familiar, maybe it’s time to take a more sensible approach.

As tech dominates every aspect of both business and pleasure, the role of data or the securing of it has never been more important. Bizarrely, there are still people that fail to see this value of regular backups until the inevitable occurs at 11 pm on a Sunday night.

However, the independent initiative is encouraging people to take the pledge the following pledge today to raise awareness on the importance of data protection and regular backups.

I solemnly swear to backup my important documents and precious memories on March 31st. I will also tell my friends and family about World Backup Day – friends don’t let friends go without a backup.

In this digital age of personalization where we drift seamlessly from device to device, why do most people hold so little regard for backing up their data? Whether it be your computer, laptop, phone, tablet or photos and videos on a separate hard drive, the risk of losing the information is very real.

The protection of your data is probably the best defense against looking like a fool if something were to happen to one of your devices on April 1st. And let’s face it; nobody wants to be that guy. On my podcast, I chat with Michael Gaffney, CEO of Leonovus, who works closely with large enterprises, financial institutions, and security firms to overcome the pain points they’re facing in the cloud (security being the biggest challenge).

There is nothing to stop you from ignoring the advice and dismissing World Backup Day as an amusing waste of time. Just don’t be too surprised when your tech friend gives you a disapproving look when you desperately ask if there anything you can do to retrieve data from a faulty hard drive.
