One of the traditions in the UK is to watch the Queens Christmas Speech on Christmas Day. Neil C. Hughes, host of the Tech Talks Daily Podcast offers an alternative Christmas message for tech fans where he looks at where we are now and what the following year in tech will look like.
After unwrapping enough Lynx Africa to stop him from perspiring for the whole of 2020, Neil returns to his podcast chair. It’s not quite the Queens Speech but Neil provides an alternative Christmas message and answers emails from his listeners.
As we enter a new world, try to imagine a new world where machines do what they do best and humans do what they do best as they seamlessly work together. Businesses that understand this and bring their employees along for the ride, invest in them and help them learn a new set of skills and use their human side rather than going on autopilot will create a dramatic edge over their competitors.
However, the businesses that add technology, automation but remove human employees could go the same way as Thomas Cook, Polaroid, Kodak, Blockbuster Video, Toys R Us and the list goes on. Neil shares his beliefs that the 2020s will be all about the hybrid workforce where the doctor with the best bedside manner will be more highly thought of than the one with a photographic memory.
What about life in 2020? Neil suspects that ads might start to sneak onto the smart speakers in our homes and we might get a glimpse of how technologies converge creating new opportunites. 5G and IOT are great examples. On a darker side, AI cyber warfare might rear its head as the good guys and bad guys use tech in a virtual game of cat and mouse.
We can also expect tech ethics to be a big part of conversations in 2020. Digital wellbeing, banning of loot boxes and using tech for greater sustainability so we can do more with less with the shrinking resources on this planet.
