83: How Weissbeerger Is Turning Drinks Into Data
I recently discovered a company called Weissbeerger. They are a company using data to transform the way breweries, restaurants, and bars all run their business. Weissbeerger has developed the first of its kind IOT beverage analytics hub attaching hardware to beer taps and even non-alcoholic fountain dispensers to deliver insights on drinking behaviors in real time. This software hardware solution helps both beverage distributors and retailers waste less and make more money all through this advanced analytics and data. They also offer a portal app for the restaurant, bar or brewery owner to check these stats in real time day or night so they can promote more effectively. I invited the COO of Weissbeerger, Ilan Sobel, onto the show.
Can you tell me a little about yourself and your role at Weissbeerger?
I’m the Chief Operating Officer of Weissbeerger. I’m 4th generation in the beverage business. My great grandfather was in the business as a bottler on horse and carriage in South Africa in the early 1900’s. My grandfather did it as well. It actually skipped my father and I actually started in the business as a helper on the truck and worked my way up. I spent 17 years with the Coca-Cola Company as an international employee. Then I saw this opportunity at Weissbeerger in the beer industry as well as the non-alcoholic beverage industry.
One of the things that caught my eye about you guys is that your website states that you are the leader of the Internet of Things (IOT) for the beverage industry. Can you tell me a little more about this and exactly what it offers?
We are seen as the leader in big data and IOT solutions for the beverage industry. To get big data capabilities we use the Internet of Things (IOT). Today there are 15 billion devices connected to the internet and by 2020 it will be 50 billion. We’ve taken this trend and now we’re connecting bars and retail outlets. We use unique hardware devices in the place of the bar where we connect to the actual beer tap and by connecting to this device we can see right to the second how much is poured from that tap, we know exactly the temperature of the beer, we know when the tap was cleaned, and we know how fresh the beer is from the keg that’s being consumed by that tap. Then we’ve created a unique capability to connect to the point of sale machines. We’re able to see in real time what comes out of the taps and we’re able to see in real time what comes out of the point of sale machine. Then to top it all off to understand what’s going on as far as people in the bar we put in consumer traffic analytic sensors which are able to sense how many people are in the bar, what the trends are as far as number of people by hour, new users versus returning users and how long they are spending in the bar.
Do you think businesses or bars that don’t invest in this technology are going to start getting left behind?
The overall industry is very challenging. When you look at the best performing bars they are all-embracing change and embracing change means embracing technology. If you don’t have better data to make better business decisions to be able to optimize how you grow your sales, optimize your costs, optimize how you spend marketing money your ability to have a growing bottom line is going to significantly restrained.
Where are you serving at the moment?
We are a global company operating in 15 markets. We have a business in North America covering Canada and the U.S.A. We’re also covering key focus markets in South America. From a Europe perspective, the U.K and Ireland are major beer markets. Then we obviously start to work eastward to the rest of Europe. We’re also in China which is a huge market. Our footprint is very broad.
What’s next for you guys?
We’re always understanding better and better our customer’s needs. There are continuously new features we’re building into our system. For example going back to the three C’s of the bar owner: cash, convenience, and control. A big factor around convenience and control is the ability to understand what’s going on in your bar when you aren’t there. Time is precious and they can’t be in their bar 24/7. We provide all the data and they can see what’s going on. They can see the revenue and the number of people but sometimes they want to see if someone is showing up for work. So one of the things we’re working on is a very cost effective camera system that we put in the bar so when you open your app you see your bar, you see who is at work, you see what’s going on and you have the data.
