If we are honest, most people reading this will have an old smartphone (or two!) sitting in a junk drawer somewhere. But, have you ever thought about getting those smartphones into the hands of kids in a way that encourages photography and active play?Thankfully JP Stoops did. Smartphones have made photography a normal part of our daily life and have become the gateway into photography for very young kids too.

Pixlplay is a great way to recycle those old smartphones. It fits a wide variety of older and current phones, doesn’t require any pairing, and features a working shutter button using the headphone jack.Inspired by the classic 35mm camera design, Pixlplay unleashes the power of smartphones for kids to enjoy!

By simply placing your Apple or Android device into Pixlplay to take photos and create fun effects with the included activities and app. Pixlplay protects your device and encourages active and creativity play through photography. However, it’s the story behind this truly inspirational story that is even more fascinating. JP Stoops left his job as a toy buyer for the Discovery Channel Stores and started Airbnb’ing from his basement to start his own company.

Most notably, Pixl Toys is on a mission to make toys that make use of the smartphone while encouraging creative and active play. This is not about one toy. Stoops has a vision is to build a range of products that embrace the power of technology to inspire real-world play, teach problem-solving and encourage creativity.  After hearing how they are enthusiastic partners in children’s learning journies and are keen to see them build a strong foundation in these important early years, I invited JP Stoops onto the show to learn more about his incredible journey.
