I was led to believe we were heading for a wireless world but a look behind my TV tells a very different story when I see all those wires everywhere. Not to mention the increasing number of bridges or hubs for IoT devices. We were hoping to talk about the wireless powered home and how GaN (gallium nitride) is making that possible! When it comes to gallium nitride, there is only one man to speak with, and he’s truly changing the world at EPC.

Alex Lidow, who is the prominent and enthusiastic evangelist of GaN with over 40 years experience in the semiconductor business. Lidow is convinced that GaN will disrupt the $30 billion power conversion industry. He first appeared on EP180 talking about Why Gallium Nitride Is About To Disrupt Silicon then returned on 203 The LIDAR Technology Behind An X-Ray Pill. But he has returned to today to talk about how it can wireless charge anything, and it will blow your mind.

The CEO and co-founder of Efficient Power Conversion and talks about how tech will make power cords disappear and how EPC is leading the charge in the wireless space.

As wireless power gains popularity, there is a push for operation in the higher frequency ISM bands of 6.78 MHz and 13.56 MHz where resonant systems allow high spatial freedom at high efficiency. At these high frequencies, traditional MOSFET technology is approaching its capability limit.

eGaN® FETs offer an alternative to MOSFETs. With switching transition speeds in the sub nano-second range, eGaN FETs can switch fast enough to be ideal for wireless power applications.

“EPC is the leading provider of gallium nitride (GaN)-based power management technology and is doing more than just improving efficiency of electrical power. It is also enabling new, life-changing applications that didn’t exist five years ago. From wireless power and autonomous vehicles to high-speed mobile communications, low cost satellites, and transformations in medical care, among many others, GaN is becoming the preferred technology for progressive companies that are eager to remain at the forefront of their industries.”

As sure as the sun comes up, GaN is going to replace silicon in power conversion – Dr. Alex Lidow

It is already widely reported that Gallium Nitride maker EPC is on a mission kill silicon chips in the name of progress. Efficient Power Conversion (EPC) recently unveiled a new generation of eGaN chips that could transform the world of technology much sooner than many expected.

From this moment forward, my three Gallium Nitride based podcast interviews with Alex Lidow will be known the GaN trilogy.

  1. Episode 180  Why Gallium Nitride Is About To Disrupt Silicon
  2. Episode 203  The LIDAR Technology Behind An X-Ray Pill
  3. Episode 237  How GaN Enables The Wireless Home
